A Brief History

KZNDA was established as a social club in 1932 and was based in Hermitage Street in Durban city centre. In 1986, KZNDA purchased the old Norwegian Seamans Mission, the building was in Mansfield Road, Berea (now Steve Biko Road). In 1991, KZNDA employed professional social workers and applied for NPO registration status with DSD, the main purpose was to provide one stop specialist services to the Deaf community of KwaZulu Natal. In 2013, KZNDA sold the building to eDeaf and now rents offices upstairs – this partnership has allowed for the creation of a Deaf Development Centre where multi-disciplinary services are available to the Deaf community in KZN.
